Will you ever be a good leader?

Updated: Jul 27, 2023

YOU WILL NEVER BE A GOOD LEADER!

Just joking... that's a blunt lie.

A young leader is standing in front if a table, smiling. Around the table there are four people, probably part of her team. They are seated on the two sides of the table. Everyone has a computer or a pad in front of them. The room is bright . The image let viewers understand that she is a good leader.

As a leadership and personal leadership coach, I have worked with many individuals who have expressed self-doubt and questioned whether they have what it takes to be a good leader. They often believe in the long-lasting myth that leaders are born, not made. It’s an idea that has been perpetuated for far too long, and it’s time to set the record straight: anyone can become a great leader.

While some individuals may have a natural inclination towards leadership, the reality is that leadership is a skill that can be developed and honed over time. Even those with an initial affinity for leadership need to work at it to become truly effective.

The good news is that there are many examples of successful leaders who have worked hard to develop or improve their skills. Bill Gates, for instance, received great help from a coach and he's so fond of coaching that, in a Ted Talk, he said "Everyone needs a coach". A similar path has been followed by other successful personalities, such as Oprah Winfrey, Richard Branson, Eric Schmidt, and many more.

However, coaching is not the only option. There are several ways to develop leadership skills and become a better leader.

One of the best ways to improve as a leader is to seek feedback from others. This can include both formal feedback through performance evaluations and informal feedback from colleagues, employees, and mentors. It’s important to be humble and open to constructive criticism and use it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Another way to develop leadership skills is to learn from others. Study the leadership styles of successful leaders and learn from their experiences. Read books and articles on leadership, attend conferences and seminars, and seek out mentorship from experienced leaders in your field.

Developing self-awareness is also key to becoming a better leader. Understanding your strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots is crucial. Take time to reflect on your leadership style, values, and goals, and be open to feedback that can help you improve.

Your story could be similar to the one of Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba Group. Ma was rejected from countless jobs and failed many times before finally finding success. Through all of his struggles, he never gave up on his dream, and his determination and leadership skills eventually led him to the top.

The path to becoming a great leader requires dedication, persistence, and the right guidance. It starts with a belief in oneself and a willingness to learn and grow. And with the right mindset and approach, anyone can become a successful and effective leader.

It’s important to remember that leadership is not just about the position or title one holds. It’s about influencing and inspiring others to achieve a common goal. It’s about leading by example and empowering others to reach their full potential. These are qualities that can be developed by anyone, regardless of their background or experience.

Leadership is a skill that can be developed and honed over time. Be persistent in your pursuit of becoming a better leader.

And remember: becoming a great leader is not a destination, but a continuous journey of growth and development.
